[note from the editor: There are two options when purchasing an insurance that covers excess (own risk) and that's the same everywhere. You can purchase it from the broker for a low price. In this case the insurance pays out to you. To be sure they will get that money from you, the rental company blocks the amount of excess from your credit card during the rental period. Or you can purchase the same insurance at the reservation desk. You will pay a much higher price, but because the insurance pays out to the rental company they don't block the amount of excess from your credit card. The choice is up to you: pay to much for your excess insurance or have the amount of excess blocked from your credit card during the rental period.]

We did not get type of car that we booked (or similar) from Alamo but: free upgrade.
Comment: The car was badly dented, the insignia on the bonnet missing, Mark on passenger door. When we returned the car at Heathrow, they said the car should never have been rented out in that condition and it would be sold immediately. Also the car much bigger than requested and consequently more expensive to run.
Ordered extra's (child seats, roof racks, navigation, ...) were not present when the car was picked up and Alamo did not solve this immediately.
