Jan from Toronto (Canada) rented a car (compact) in Liberia from Thrifty and used the service of broker RentalCars. RentalCars gets a 1 (Poor) and Thrifty a 1 (Poor). Jan wouldn't use the service from RentalCars again and wouldn't rent a car from Thrifty again.
Booking the car
The website of RentalCars did not give enough information or the information is not correct:
There was a problem with this information: All of the above was incorrect or unclear - price, extras, insurance.
Comment: 1. Price: both online and by phone I was quoted a price in US $. In fact my credit card was actually charged in £ sterling which meant an extra $100.00 - $200.00 cost by the time my credit card company transferred the fees to Cdn $. I rented cars twice this season and despite my cautions to the agent, the same thing happened both times. I have written on numerous occasions to customer service at rentalcars.com with never a single reply. 2. Insurances: the insurances in Costa Rica are very tricky and neither your agents nor your website explains sufficiently. When you show up at Thrifty they try to insist that you buy all kinds of extra coverage and refuse to accept all documentation from your insurance companies at home. Rentalcars.com is not clear enough on this insurance. 3. Although my contract with rentalcars clearly stated 'all fees and extras included' on both occasions I could not leave Thrifty without paying license fees and road taxes. Very annoying given the already overpriced rates. 4. Knowing a little about the extra insurances required in Costa Rica, I always call your agents to try to clarify. I found they are not informed about the particulars of rentals in Costa Rica.
The voucher and the confirmation mail received from RentalCars after booking the car did provide sufficient and correct information:
Comment: It didn't seem to matter to Thrifty what the voucher said, there were still extra charges.
Before picking up the car there has been contact with RentalCars (by mail, phone, live chat). How helpfull and friendly they were is rated:

Thrifty offered extra insurances that were excessive.
The info the RentalCars provided on the voucher about not needing extra insurances was clear:
Comment: No. I didn't see anything on the voucher to indicate that I'd be required to pay more. There was nothing about Thrifty taking a $1250.00 security deposit on my credit card. Nor was there anything about other extra insurances which were offered at the desk. During the many times that I was present at the Thrifty counter I was always witness to the shock of other clients and the resulting confusion and arguments.
The staff at the pick-up office of Thrifty was friendly and helpfull:
Comment about other issues when picking up the car: The first agent who helped me was aggressive, insistent and argumentative. Only when I returned to Thrifty two days later and insistent on seeing a manager did I get a more reasonable approach, better explanation and some satisfaction. On subsequent visits other agents were more customer friendly.
Dropping off the car
Thrifty claimed the car was damaged. That claim was wrong. The way Thrifty solved this is rated:
Comment: Thrifty claimed that we had dented the side door. In fact the fellow who walked us through the inspection had marked the ding on the wrong side of the car. It all got resolved to our satisfaction. Time after time when I was in their office I witnessed disputes over the condition of the returning car between other clients and the agents. It made me really worry especially when I had the second car from them

Comment: We paid extremely high prices for our cars. The first month the total was $1400.00 Cdn approx and the next 2 weeks about $700.00 and that was with basic insurance coverage only. I don't know what we would have had to pay had there been any significant damage. For that we got a Toyota Yaris with no central locking system, no second key, manual roll down windows - extremely basic!
The service Thrifty delivered:
We wouldn't rent a car from Thrifty again.
Comment: Considering the price we paid I felt the service was poor. We asked for a drop off in Playas del Coco, about a 25 minute ride from Thrifty but they refused. In previous years when we've asked for a similar service from other rental agencies (Vamos, Adobe) it has always been accorded. I did ask the manager for a second driver and that he did agree to at no extra charge. Perhaps it was a peace offering for all the other hassles. I was thankful for that.
The service RentalCars delivered:
We wouldn't use the service of RentalCars again.
Comment: The phone service I had from agents was friendly and polite but the agents need to be better informed about the Costa Rica situation. The website need to be changed to make access to customer service better and when you have a complaint THEY NEED TO RESPOND!!!
[note from the editor: At some offices they use every trick of the book to earn something extra: sell excessive insurances, claim the same damage over and over again. Not only some unknown rental campanies. Some franchises of welknown companies are also notorious for these practices. Check our top 5 car rent pitfalls to avoid these problems. Stick to what your vouchers states: that's what you, your broker and the rental company agreed upon! Contact your broker and don't agree upon an unacceptable offer (like excessive insurances) of a rental company, because after you did there's nothing a broker can do about that new agreement between you and the pick-up or drop-off office.]
